For claims related to global medical assistance or out-of-country care, follow the steps below to ensure timely processing.
Travel Claims
Travel benefits under the Active Plan and the 60+ Plan provide coverage for eligible emergency medical care and out-of-country treatment while travelling outside your home province or outside Canada, subject to plan rules and eligibility requirements.
Coverage applies only if you and your eligible dependents are enrolled in your provincial healthcare plan.
What to Do in a Medical Emergency While Travelling
1. Contact Canada Life Immediately
In the event of a medical emergency while travelling, contact Canada Life / Global Medical Assistance as soon as possible.
Use the emergency number listed on your benefits card or in the plan booklet
Be prepared to provide your name, member number, and details of the emergency
Canada Life can help coordinate care, arrange hospital payment where required, and provide guidance on next steps.
After Receiving Medical Care
2. Gather Supporting Documentation
Keep copies of all documents related to your treatment, including:
Medical bills and receipts
Hospital or physician reports describing the diagnosis and treatment
Prescription records for medications received during travel
3. Submit a Travel Claim
To submit a travel claim:
Complete the Out-of-Country Claim Form, available at www.benefitsoffilm.com or through Canada Life
Submit the completed form and supporting documents as instructed by Canada Life
Deadlines and submission requirements for travel claims may vary depending on the province and type of care received. Members are encouraged to contact Canada Life for guidance.
Payment of Benefits
Eligible expenses are paid according to plan coverage and limits
In some cases, Canada Life may pay providers directly
Where reimbursement applies, payment is issued following claim approval
