Drug Claims - Active & 60+ Plans

Use your Canada Life benefits card for pay-direct claims, or submit online through My Canada Life at Work for faster payment.

Drug Claims

Drug benefits under the Active and 60+ Plans help cover the cost of eligible prescription medications. Coverage is administered by Canada Life and coordinated with BC Fair PharmaCare to help manage prescription drug costs.

How to Make a Drug Claim

Using Your Canada Life Benefits Card

Most pharmacies can submit prescription claims directly to Canada Life at the time of purchase.

  • Present your Canada Life benefits card at the pharmacy

  • The plan pays the covered portion of the prescription cost directly

  • You pay any remaining balance at the point of purchase

Submitting a Drug Claim Yourself

If a pharmacy is unable to submit claims directly, you can submit the claim yourself.

1. Gather Required Documentation

Obtain an itemised receipt from the pharmacy showing:

  • Pharmacy name and address

  • Prescription number

  • Date of purchase

  • Name and dosage of the medication

  • Total cost and amount paid

2. Complete the Drug Claim Form

Complete all required sections, including your plan and member details.

3. Submit the Claim

Online

  • Log in to My Canada Life at Work

  • Upload scanned copies of your receipts and submit the claim

By Mail

  • Mail the completed Drug Claim Form and receipts to Canada Life at the address listed on the form

Special Authorisation for Certain Drugs

Some medications, including high-cost or specialty drugs, may require prior approval by Canada Life before coverage is confirmed.

If required, Canada Life may request supporting information from your prescribing physician, such as:

  • Diagnosis and treatment details

  • Medical justification for the medication

Payment of Benefits

  • For pay-direct claims, Canada Life pays the covered portion directly to the pharmacy

  • For self-submitted claims, payments are issued by direct deposit (online submissions) or cheque (mail submissions)

Understanding Your Drug Coverage

The plan uses a two-tier drug structure:

  • Tier 1: BC Fair PharmaCare (covered at 100%, subject to provincial rules)

  • Tier 2: Supplementary drug coverage under the plan, subject to coinsurance and plan limits

Coordinating Drug Benefits

If you have additional drug coverage through another plan:

  • Submit the claim first to the primary plan

  • Submit any remaining eligible balance to the secondary plan

Helpful Tips

  • Use your Canada Life benefits card whenever possible

  • Keep copies of receipts for your records

  • Check whether a drug is covered under Fair PharmaCare or the supplementary plan before filling a prescription
