Tom Kaczmarski

Board Chair

For Tom Kaczmarski, becoming a trustee with the Employee Life and Health Trust, known within the organization as the Trust, was a pivotal moment in his career. Introduced to the Trust by chance during a conversation with member Randy Stamhuis, Tom instantly recognized it as the perfect avenue to channel his long-held desire to serve others. His involvement with the Trust has given him a renewed sense of purpose, allowing him to make a tangible impact on the wellbeing of the film community he has been part of for decades.

Tom’s passion for helping others is deeply rooted in his early career. Originally intending to pursue a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology, Tom worked with developmentally handicapped individuals in Milton, Ontario. Though the role was fulfilling, after two years, the emotional demands led to burnout. A chance conversation with a friend then led him to William F. White in Toronto, a well-known film equipment rental house, in 1984. What was intended to be a brief career detour turned into a lifelong journey in the film industry.

In 1988, Tom relocated to Vancouver, where he balanced a burgeoning career with the responsibilities of being a single father. By the second season of The X-Files, he had earned the role of key grip on the second unit, a position that brought both professional success and immense responsibility. However, as his career thrived, Tom felt a lingering pull toward the fulfillment he experienced in his earlier work helping others.

In 2015, Tom chose to step back from his role as a head of department, which opened up new opportunities. He began working alongside his son, a key grip, as his second on set—an experience that brought great personal joy. This shift also allowed Tom to take on the role of shop steward, reconnecting him with his advocacy roots. It was in this capacity that he was introduced to the Employee Health and Wellness Trust.

Tom’s involvement with the Trust has brought his journey full circle, merging his desire to give back with his decades of experience in the film industry. As a trustee, he plays an integral role in ensuring the health and welfare of the crews and colleagues he’s worked alongside for years. This work allows Tom to continue nurturing the sense of community that has defined his career, while also giving him the flexibility to enjoy his passions outside of work, including Zen Buddhism and philosophy. Through his work with the Trust, Tom is able to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around him—fulfilling both his professional and personal values.
