Supporting Your Recovery

Q: What is IATSE’s policy on union dues during medical leave?

A: Members can apply for medical leave to pay reduced dues while recovering from illness or injury. Submit the Request for Medical Leave form (available on the IATSE Local 891 website). Once approved, reduced dues apply immediately and must be paid manually.

While Tom is on disability leave, his wife Sarah takes over managing the household finances. She notices that union dues are still expected and wonders if there’s any flexibility during Tom’s recovery. After visiting the IATSE Local 891 website, she learns that members can apply for a medical leave to pay reduced dues while they’re off work.

Tom downloads the Medical Leave Policy and the Request for Medical Leave form, fills them out, and submits them to the union. The administration processes the request promptly—once the form is received, the reduced dues apply right away. Since dues are paid manually, nothing is automatically deducted from Tom’s account.

With this adjustment, Sarah and Tom feel relieved to have some financial breathing room while Tom focuses on healing. For them, it’s another reminder of how the union supports its members through every stage of their careers.
