Out-of-Country Emergency Care

Q: What does Out-of-Country Emergency Care cover?

A: 100% reimbursement for emergency treatment while abroad, referred by a Canadian physician.

Alex, a cinematographer, was heading to Europe for a shoot and wanted to know what medical emergencies the plan covered. He consulted Tom, who had experience navigating travel benefits.

“Out-of-Country Emergency Care reimburses 100% for emergencies while you’re temporarily outside Canada for vacation, business, or education,” Tom said. “It covers physician treatment, hospitalization, diagnostic services, and even paramedical services or emergency dental treatment for accidental injuries.”

Alex asked about follow-up care. Tom clarified, “Ongoing care after the initial emergency isn’t covered. Also, pregnancy-related expenses after the 34th week are excluded.”

Tom emphasized the importance of having provincial healthcare. “You need to be enrolled in your provincial plan for any out-of-country claims to be valid,” he said.

Alex felt reassured knowing his medical needs would be covered during the trip. He thanked Tom for explaining the benefits in detail and made sure to carry the travel assistance contact information before heading abroad.
