Navigating Unexpected Illness

Q: Can Tom receive disability benefits if he’s not covered by the hour bank?

A: If Tom has Active Plan coverage, he may still qualify for Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits even if he is not currently covered by the hour bank, as long as he meets the eligibility criteria at the time the disability occurs.

Tom’s friend Mike, a fellow grip, faced an unexpected challenge when he was diagnosed with a serious illness. At the time, he wasn’t fully covered by the hour bank, as he hadn’t worked enough hours recently. Unsure of his options, Mike reached out to a Benefits of Film representative at IATSE Local 891 for guidance.

To his relief, Mike learned that, under the Active Plan, members may still qualify for Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits even if they aren’t fully hour bank–covered at the time the disability occurs—provided they meet the plan’s eligibility criteria. With the union’s help, Mike submitted the required paperwork, and after his case was reviewed, his disability claim was approved.

Mike began receiving $725 per week, which allowed him to focus on his recovery without the added burden of lost income. Tom visited him regularly, and each time he saw Mike’s growing sense of relief, he was reminded of how vital the union’s support system truly is—providing stability, even when life takes an unexpected turn.
