Finding Support During a Union Suspension
Q: What support is available if I am suspended from the union?
A: If suspended, coverage under the Benefits of Film plan is paused until union membership is reinstated; contact AGA Benefit Solutions for guidance.
Tom knew how challenging it could be to navigate life’s ups and downs, especially in the unpredictable world of film production. One of his colleagues, Chris, had recently faced a temporary suspension from IATSE Local 891 due to some work-related issues. Feeling isolated and concerned about his future, Chris reached out to Tom, hoping to understand what kind of support he could still access during this difficult time.
Tom listened carefully, wanting to reassure his friend. “The good news,” he began, “is that even during a suspension, you still have access to some essential supports from the Active Plan. And if you were on the 60+ Plan, the same applies. It may not include everything, but key services are there to help you through.”
He explained that Chris could still access drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, as well as the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). “The EFAP, for example, can connect you with a counselor or offer work-life support like financial advice or career guidance,” Tom said. “It’s completely confidential—and designed for situations just like this.”
Tom gave Chris the EFAP contact number and encouraged him to reach out for support. Feeling relieved, Chris thanked him, knowing he had options to lean on during this uncertain time.
For Tom, it was a powerful reminder: the union’s benefits weren’t just about day-to-day coverage—they were about showing up when members needed it most, and helping them find their footing again.
