Ensuring Your Family is There When You Need Them Most

Q: What is the Family Transportation Benefit?

A: The Family Transportation Benefit is designed to support you and your family during a difficult time if you are hospitalized due to a covered injury. If you are hospitalized more than 100 kilometers away from home, the plan will cover up to $15,000 in transportation costs for your immediate family members to visit you. The benefit is available to Active Plan members.

Tom was working on a remote film set deep in the mountains when disaster struck. A colleague, Jake, suffered a serious accident on set and was rushed to a hospital more than 150 kilometers away in the city. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Jake’s injuries required extended hospitalization far from their base camp.

Once Jake’s condition stabilized, his wife and children wanted to visit him and offer emotional support. But the distance posed a major challenge—not just logistically, but financially. The costs of flights, car rentals, and hotel stays added stress to an already difficult situation.

Because Jake had Active Plan coverage, Tom knew his family could access the Family Transportation Benefit, which provides up to $15,000 in travel expenses when a covered member is hospitalized far from home. This benefit helped Jake’s wife, Sarah, travel to see him regularly, providing much-needed comfort and encouragement during his recovery.

Though Tom and the rest of the crew wished they could do more, he felt grateful that such a thoughtful benefit existed—one that allowed families to stay close during life’s toughest moments.
