Duplicate X-Rays and Custom Fluoride Appliances

Q: Are duplicate x-rays or custom fluoride appliances covered?

A: No, these services are not covered.

Tom’s friend Sarah, a script supervisor, recently went for a dental check-up and was told she needed duplicate x-rays because her originals were misplaced. Confused about whether this would be covered, she reached out to Tom for clarity.

“Unfortunately, duplicate x-rays aren’t covered by the plan,” Tom explained. “The benefits only cover the initial x-rays taken as part of routine or emergency exams. If your dentist requests duplicates, they’d have to be justified as medically necessary, which is rare.”

Sarah was also advised to get a custom fluoride appliance to help with tooth sensitivity. “Custom fluoride appliances are excluded too,” Tom added. “These fall under non-essential or preventative measures like oral hygiene instructions or nutritional counseling, which aren’t part of the coverage.”

Understanding this, Sarah decided to discuss alternatives with her dentist. The dentist found an over-the-counter fluoride treatment and suggested imaging options that didn’t involve duplication, saving Sarah unnecessary expenses.

For Tom, this was a reminder of how important it is to understand the plan’s exclusions and guide colleagues toward practical solutions for uncovered treatments.
