Disability During Ineligible Coverage Periods

Q: Are benefits paid if I wasn’t covered when my disability occurred?

A: No, disabilities occurring outside of plan coverage are excluded.

James, a lighting technician, had let his benefits lapse during a gap in work. When he became disabled from a sports injury, he asked Tom if STD benefits could help. Tom explained, “Benefits won’t cover disabilities if you weren’t covered by the plan at the time of the incident.”

James realized he needed to maintain active coverage to avoid future gaps. With Tom’s guidance, he re-enrolled in the plan once he returned to work.
