Adding Your Common-law Partner to Your Coverage
Q: What requirements are there for adding a common-law spouse?
A: To add a common-law spouse, you must have lived together in a committed relationship for at least 12 consecutive months. Submit a Group Change Form and a Common-Law Declaration Form to AGA Benefit Solutions. No additional documents are required. This process applies to both the Active and 60+ Plan.
Tom’s colleague, Laura, had been in a committed relationship with her partner, Alex, for over a year. They’d recently moved in together, and Laura wanted to make sure Alex could be covered under her Active plan. Knowing Tom had gone through a similar process, she reached out for some guidance.
Over a lunch break, Tom explained what she needed to do. “To add a common-law spouse like Alex, you’ll need to fill out two forms: the Group Change Form and the Common-Law Declaration Form,” he said. “These forms confirm that you’ve been living together for at least one year and are in a committed relationship.”
Tom showed her where to find the forms on benefitsoffilm.com and assured her, “That’s all you need—no extra documents like leases or bills. Just submit the completed forms to AGA Benefit Solutions.”
He also emphasized, “This process is the same whether you’re on the Active Plan or the 60+ Plan.”
A few weeks after submitting the forms, Laura received confirmation that Alex was officially added to her coverage. She felt relieved knowing Alex now had access to the same health and dental benefits she did. For Tom, helping Laura was a reminder of the union’s strong sense of community—always ready to support one another, both on set and beyond.
