Access for All: Coverage for Mobility Needs

Q: Are outdoor wheelchair ramps covered?

A: The Active plan covers outdoor wheelchair ramps up to $2,000 once per person’s lifetime, with documentation required for the claim.

Tom’s friend, Alice, had recently arranged for her father to move in with her so she could help care for him. Her father used a wheelchair, and Alice wanted to make her home more accessible by installing an outdoor wheelchair ramp. Unsure if her Active plan would cover this, she asked Tom for advice.

Tom was happy to help. “The Active plan and the 60+ plan actually do cover outdoor wheelchair ramps,” he said, “but it’s limited to $2,000 and can only be used once per person’s lifetime. It’s a great support for situations just like this, where accessibility modifications make a real difference in quality of life.”

He advised Alice to keep all invoices and documentation from the installation company, just in case they needed it for the claim. Knowing that the plan would help cover this cost gave Alice peace of mind, and she felt relieved that her father’s needs would be supported in their home. For Tom, it was heartening to see how the plan extended beyond standard health coverage to support accessibility and independence for members and their families.
