Disability Benefits (Long-Term) | Active Plan

Long-term disability benefits provide income support during extended illness or injury.

Benefit Amount and Duration

  • $3,200 per month

  • Paid bi-weekly at $1,476.92

  • Maximum duration: 5 years

Eligibility Requirements

  • Your Canada Life Case Manager will transition your Short-Term Disability (STD) claim to Long-Term Disability (LTD) if needed—no separate application required.

  • The Case Manager will notify you if any additional medical information is required.

Income Offsets

The LTD benefit will be reduced if you receive other income, including:

  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP): Offset applies only to the primary benefit.

  • WorkSafeBC Benefits: All wage loss benefits are deducted, except permanent partial disability awards received for at least 12 months prior to the disability.

Recurring Disability Rules

  • If you return to work but earn less than 280 hours within 180 days, the disability will be treated as a continuation of your previous claim.

  • If you earn 280+ hours, any new illness or injury will be treated as a new claim.

When Your LTD Benefits End

Your benefits will stop under the following conditions:

  • Not Disabled: You are no longer considered disabled.

  • Medical Care Ends: You stop receiving care from a qualified healthcare provider.

  • Failure to Provide Proof: You don’t submit required documentation.

  • Refusal of Exam: You refuse a medical exam by a Canada Life-appointed physician.

  • Non-Compliance: You don’t follow the recommended treatment plan.

  • Unauthorized Travel: You leave the country without prior written approval.

  • Approved Travel: Travel is allowed if Canada Life confirms it won’t interfere with your recovery.

  • Return to Work: You return to work without prior approval.

  • Maximum Benefit Reached: You’ve received the full 5 years of benefits.

  • Age Limit Reached: You've reached 65 years of age

Travel While on Disability

  • If you plan to travel while receiving LTD benefits, you must obtain prior written approval from your Canada Life Case Manager.

  • Travel is allowed only if it does not delay your recovery or ability to return to work.
