Important update

As of April 1, 2026, Optional Life Insurance is closed to new enrolments and increases in coverage. If you already have Optional Life Insurance, your existing coverage remains in place.

This benefit allows you and your spouse to have additional life insurance coverage for greater financial security. If you currently have Optional Life Insurance, this coverage helps increase your financial protection and maintain peace of mind.

Coverage Amount:

If you currently have Optional Life Insurance, your coverage may include:

  • You and your spouse may have coverage of up to $500,000 (in units of $5,000), subject to approval by Canada Life at the time of enrolment.

  • If you enrolled as a new member, you may have been able to obtain up to $30,000 of coverage without a medical exam within 30 days of joining the union or the plan.

Age Limits:

If you currently have Optional Life Insurance, the following provisions may apply:

  • Under age 65: Coverage may have been obtained without a medical exam if your basic group life insurance coverage was reduced because you had not met the minimum hours in prior calendar years.

  • Ages 65 to 69: If covered by the hour bank, you and your spouse may have coverage in units ranging from $5,000 to $500,000. A medical exam may have been required.

When Coverage Ends:

  • Your optional life insurance coverage ends when you turn 70.

  • Your spouse’s coverage ends when you or your spouse turns 70, whichever comes first.

Conversion:

  • If your or your spouse’s Optional Life Insurance ends before age 65, you may be able to convert your coverage to an individual policy without providing proof of good health.

  • To do so, you must apply and pay the first premium within 31 days after your group insurance ends.

Exclusions:

Suicide Clause: No benefit will be paid if the insured commits suicide within two years of buying or increasing optional life insurance. In such cases, Canada Life refunds the premiums received.
